The classic 1980s comedy series Police Academy is set to return to the big screen.
New Line cinema is apparently revisiting the franchise with original producer Paul Maslansky returning, The Hollywood Reporter said. The original Police Academy film starred Steve Guttenberg. It was released in 1984 and spawned six more movies and a spin-off TV show grossing $240m (£158m) worldwide. Reports suggest that this new Police Academy movie is going to star a totally new cast with great comedians. |

Who remembers when Paul Weller from The Jam said that a reunion would "never, ever happen", and that reformations are "sad"?
He went on to say, "Me and my children would have to be destitute and starving in the gutter before I'd even consider that, and I don't think that'll happen anyway ... [the Jam's music] still means something to people and a lot of that's because we stopped at the right time, it didn't go on and become embarrassing." Well, although a full reunion hasn't happened, Paul Weller and former bandmate Bruce Foxton have been working together again. In fact, you'll hear Bruce appear on a couple of songs on Paul's new solo album 'Wake Up The Nation'. We're not sure if the 'other' member of The Jam, Rick Buckler, is that happy about this though as he's just quit his own band 'From The Jam', which saw HIM working with Bruce Foxton! Here's one of the videos from back in the day, when they were still one harmonious group.

One of my favourite parts of the 80's was racing down to the local Virgin Megastore, Our Price, HMV or Woolworths to grab the latest 12" remix.
Recently a lot of the these 12 inch singles have been released on CD, but not many people realise that a few record companies even made videos to go with them! Ahh, yes these were the days when record companies had money to, er, "invest". Here's the 12" video for the 1987's Giant Steps song 'The World Don't Need (Another Lover)', which is a fantastic tune!!

Martha & The Muffins originally hit #10 in the UK with their song Echo Beach in the summer of 1980.
Well, here we are almost 30 years later and the band have just released their new album 'Delicate'. It's great to have them back and it just goes to show how the 80s really do live on! Check out the video for their new song 'Mess' (and see if you can guess who they've borrowed part of the hook from) (By the way, we really hope to have Martha & John - who make up the band - on Totally 80s one weekend soon). ![]()

It takes a particularly camp effort to really stand out in the 1980s. One such production came at the very beginning of the decade. I refer to Xanadu by Olivia Newton John. Written and produced by Jeff lynne of ELO fame and featured in the preposterous film of the same name, it really is a quintessential 80s tune...and its coming back!
The new version is by Sharleen Spiteri who first appeared at the other end of the decade in the band Texas and comes with a wonderfully silly video. I'll post that soon. In the meantime, here's the original in all its glory! : )

Far be it for me to contradict the Executive Producer..but 'Susan' is one of the few films Madge got away with as far as the critics are concerned. I think a certain presenter of Totally 80s With Gary King (ie. Gary King) must be a secret fan of 'Susan'. The critics (and Gary) may have liked it but it's certainly not on my 'Most Favourite Films' list as you may have guessed. ![]() |

There are so many 80s movies that are apparently being considered for remakes including Ferris Bueller, Dirty Dancing, Top Gun and even Short Circuit! One movie I'd love to see remade though is Desperately Seeking Susan... but only because the original was soooo bad. ![]() Far be it for me to contradict the Executive Producer..but 'Susan' is one of the few films Madge got away with as far as the critics are concerned. |
